The Service said that "Following a breakdown in the automated ventilation system, the temperature rose in the poultry living premises leading to an increased concentration of carbon dioxide and ammonia". Some chickens were rescued when doors to the building were opened.

Vilniaus Paukstynas currently has 42 broiler flocks comprising over a million birds. It produces more than 50,000 eggs and 80 tons of broiler meat each day. The company is located in Rudima, 12 kilometres from Vilnius.
