Association chairman Jimmy Chong Tong Sing said it was impossible for dealers to sell their chickens at RM5.60 per kg when the retail price obtained by dealers was RM5.70 per kg.

"We cannot possibly survive based on the ceiling price set by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry," he told a news conference here Monday.

The ministry had announced a ceiling price of RM5.60 per kg in the retail of standard chicken (with shank, head, liver and gizzard) and the super chicken variety (without shank, head, liver and gizzard) at RM6.25 per kg.

The new prices would take effect from Thursday to Oct 20 for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and from Nov 1 to 15 for Deepavali.

Chong also warned that there could be a shortage of chickens in the market as chicken farmers had cut down on production to reduce their losses.
