US - Opponents of a large-scale poultry operation that has been awarded a construction permit by state regulators - despite being only a mile from a state park - are now challenging the plant's operating permit.

The Ozbun Farms confined-animal feeding operation eventually could house up to 65,600 pullets, or laying hens, for the George's Processing Plant north of Cassville. The operation is about a mile from Roaring River State Park.

Opponents filed a motion seeking a stay of the operating permit, and previously filed an appeal of the construction permit, which will be heard in early January.

The state's Administrative Hearing Commission, a division of the economic branch of state government that tries to resolve conflicts - usually between two parties - plans to hear arguments on the operating permit on Wednesday in Jefferson City, said Ranada Vinyard, an attorney for the commission.
