Administrators were appointed to oversee the company early last month, but late last week resolved they could not continue to support it.

Despite the setback, both the Central Goldfields Shire Council and the Maryborough Chamber of Commerce are confident most of the staff will find new work within the town.

The last day of work for most of the 100 staff, most of whom are residents of the Central Goldfields Shire, is Friday.

Davis Poultry, situated at the south of the town’s central business district in Nelson Street, had been a steady employer in the Maryborough region for about 13 years.

Goldfields Shire mayor Geoff Lovett said negative impacts would only be short-term because the council was committed to looking for a buyer of the factory.

‘‘We have been dealing with the voluntary administrator for the past six weeks on almost a daily basis and our opinion is this industry does have a future here in Maryborough,’’ he said.
