Choose Chicken for a Weight Control Diet

US - The National Chicken Council continues to support the advice given by the U.S. government, doctors, nutritionists and dietitians for many years: chicken, turkey, fish, and lean meat can anchor a diet low in fat to control body weight and maintain good health.

“Getting about 30 percent of calories from protein protects muscle mass, boosts fat loss, and dampens hunger and blood pressure better than a higher carbohydrate diet,” said Steve Pretanik, director of science and technology for NCC. “Lowering fat reduces calories to stimulate weight loss.”

A recent international report on obesity and health suggests a link between overweight and various types of cancer. However, maintaining good body weight has been the standard advice for consumers for many years.

“Chicken, especially breast meat, is very low in fat and can help maintain proper body weight,” Pretanik said. “Exercise has always been recognized as a vital part of anyone’s health maintenance regime.”

The National Chicken Council represents integrated chicken producer-processors, the companies that produce, process and market chickens. Member companies of NCC account for approximately 95 percent of the chicken sold in the United States.
