UK - Marks and Spencer has said it is not looking to import turkeys next Christmas after it came in for criticism from farmers for stocking Brazilian birds in 2007.

The retailer claimed it had to source some turkeys from abroad this year after stock levels were affected by the bird flu outbreak in November last year.

Farmers had called on Marks and Spencer to reverse the policy, claiming they should be supporting British agriculture.

However, the company have said that Christmas 2007 was a one-off and they would not be likely to do the same this year.

A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer said: “Our policy is to buy from the British Isles wherever possible.

“This Christmas all our whole, fresh M&S turkeys were from the UK and were either Organic or Free Range - this was a first on the high street.
