The donation has been made by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The Director in charge, General Bernard Vallat, announced the donation at a ceremony where he was presented with Vietnam ’s insignia for “the cause of agriculture development” in Ha Noi on March 14.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat spoke highly of the OIE’s cooperation on a number of projects, including practical recommendations and expertise in the fight against epidemics, especially bird flu.

“ Vietnam ’s initial successes in the fight against bird flu are attributed not only to the government’s high resolve, but also to close cooperation with OIE,” Minister Phat said.

Vietnam was the first country in the world to ask OIE to assess its animal husbandry sector independently and publicise its assessment. By 2006, 60 countries have followed the same suit.

At the ceremony, the OIE said they were ready to help Vietnam combat rabies in dogs.
