The bill, SB 1373, creates a poultry husbandry council to develop rules for poultry husbandry and the handling of eggs, reports Tucson Citizen.

"This bill is the industry's attempt to stay proactive and answer consumers' demand for the better treatment of chickens," said the bill's sponsor, Sen. Robert Burns, R-Peoria.

The council will include one egg producer from Maricopa or Pinal County, one from another county in Arizona, one veterinarian who deals with poultry, one person representing the public and the state veterinarian.

Members of the council will not be paid and would be in charge of developing rules for poultry husbandry and the production of eggs sold in Arizona. The council would provide a poultry husbandry education and training program and conduct outreach.
