The Brazilian Association of Chicken Producers and Exporters (ABEF) commented that this could make India the number 1 buyer of Brazilian chicken. Until now, that position was held by Russia, which purchased 194,000 tonnes of the meat from Brazil in 2007.

According to a statement from the Brazilian agriculture ministry, India is a potentially huge market for its chicken as the majority of the one billion population do not eat beef because they are Hindu.

The statement continued that India has been unable to meet domestic demand for poultry meat since avian flu forced the culling of over one million of its chickens in recent years.
