SCOTLAND - A legal ruling has confirmed that in an outbreak of avian flu, poultry may be euthanased by suffocation if other methods have been ruled out.

The High Court has upheld the legality of new rules allowing chickens to be killed in their thousands by slow suffocation in the event of a widespread bird flu outbreak, reports The Scotsman newspaper.

A judge ruled that the government was entitled to use 'ventilation shutdown' as a last resort.
