Writing in the Los Angeles Times, journalist George Skelton expresses his opinion that the forthcoming Proposition 2 going to the ballot in California on 4 November is about the state's laying hens.

He says that the largest pork producer in California has said it will stop using small crates, and there are few veal operations in the state.

In the current economy, it is better to let the market sort out the cage-free issue instead of forcing ranchers to make expensive changes to their practices, writes Mr Skelton.
