Cambodia Reports Highly Pathogenic Bird Flu

CAMBODIA - The veterinary authorities have notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The immediate notification report was submitted to OIE on 25 December. It describes one case of HPAI.

It occurred in Kraing Chek village, Deumrus commune, Kandal Steung in Kandal province. This is near to the capital, Phnom Penh. The backyard flock included 40 ducks and 80 chickens that died, and a total of 344 birds (ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys) were destroyed.

The H5N1 virus is suspected, and has been confirmed by simple lab tests.
