Bird Flu Breaks out in Nepal

NEPAL - The veterinary authorities have sent an immediate notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) regarding its first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) since December 1996.

The report, dated 16 January, describes the outbreak in 13,000 backyard poultry at Nagaar Nagarpalika, Jhapa in Mechi province in the east of the country. It borders India and is close to the border with Bangladesh.

All 14 birds affected died or were destroyed. The H5N1 virus has been confirmed.
