First Case of Bird Flu Reported in Sikkim, India

INDIA - The veterinary authorities have reported the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the state of Sikkim to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The veterinary authorities in India sent Follow On Report No. 6 to OIE on 21 January 2009.

The one outbreak took place in a flock of 86 birds at Ravongla Municipality in South Sikkim. Nine birds were affected, and all but one of them died.

The H5N1 virus has been confirmed.
