Promotion Needed to Boost Intake of Poultry Products

INDIA - Speakers at Poultry India Expo 2009 called for greater efforts to promote poultry meat and egg consumption.

The poultry industry and the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) should initiate efforts to promote the consumption of poultry meat and egg, says C. Chandrahasan, Dean, Veterinary College and Research Institute, reports The Hindu.

Inaugurating a two-day exhibition and conference 'Poultry India Expo 2009', organised by NRS Publications, publishers of Poultry Fortune, here on 18 January. Mr. Chandrahasan said that the per-capita consumption of egg and poultry meat remains very low in the country.

People should be educated about the health benefits of consuming poultry meat and eggs.

A large number of people, particularly the younger generations, now prefer non-vegetarian food. The poultry farmers should take advantage of this trend to promote egg consumption.

The animal husbandry activities should be promoted aggressively in order to meet the growing food requirement in the country.

He asked the poultry farmers to improve the quality of eggs to increase exports. They should make use of the facilities and services provided by the institute for improving the quality of poultry meat and egg.

Speakers included NECC Namakkal Zone chairman, P. Selvaraj; Namakkal Poultry Farmers Federation president, P. Muthusamy; Venkateshwara Hatcheries Private Limited general manager, S.N. Kshirsagar; and Expo Chief Executive, M.A. Nazeer.

Speakers at the conference highlighted a number of problems faced by the poultry industry.

Experts from the industry, academicians, service providers, consultants, entrepreneurs in breeding, feed and other nutritional products, pharmaceutical,biological, equipment, processing,coding and marking, packaging, marketing areas are participating in the exhibition and conference.
