Vietnam Reports Two New Cases of Bird Flu

VIET NAM - The veterinary authorities have reported two new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The veterinary authority in Vietnam has sent Follow up Report No. 25 (dated 3 February 2009) to OIE.

It describes two new outbreaks of HPAI in poultry in Tran Van Thoi in Ca Mau province in the far south of the country.

The first case was in a flock of 580 unvaccinated 45-day-old ducks. Of these, 192 birds were affected and the rest were destroyed.

In the other case, 189 birds in an unvaccinated flock of 2107 village chickens and ducks were affected. The remaining birds were destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 virus was confirmed.
