Newcastle Disease Breaks Out in Peru

PERU - The veterinary authorities have informed the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about a new outbreak of Newcastle disease.

The Peruvian veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification to OIE dated 15 May.

It reports one new outbreak of Newcastle disease in the city of Tacna in the most southerly region of the country. It started on 22 April in a small flock of cockerels used for fighting. Fourteen birds in the flock were affected and died; the remaining six birds were destroyed. The case is described as 'resolved'.

The last outbreak of Newcastle disease in Peru was in March 2009.
