Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - This week, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that the number of broiler-type eggs set was down four per cent compared to the same week last year, and three per cent fewer chicks were placed.

Broiler-Type Eggs Set In 19 Selected States Down 4 Per Cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 200 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 4 July 2009. This was down 4 per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler Chicks Placed Down 3 Per Cent

Broiler growers in the 19-State weekly program placed 170 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 4 July 2009. Placements were down 3 per cent from the comparable week a year earlier. Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 through 4 July 2009 were 4.54 billion, down 6 per cent from the same period a year earlier.
