The Italian veterinary authority has sent an Immediate Notification dated 3 December to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

A flock of 16 racing pigeons near Siena in the region of Tuscany was affected. Eleven of the birds died.

The report adds that, in accordance with the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code, chapter 10.13, the outbreak does not change the Newcastle disease-free status of Italy because the birds involved do not fall within the definition of poultry.

The last case of Newcastle disease in the country was in June 2008.
