Broiler-type eggs set in 19 selected states up one per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 204 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 26 December 2009. This was up one per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler chicks placed up slightly

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 166 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 26 December 2009. Placements were up slightly from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 to 26 December 2009 were 8.62 billion, down four per cent from the same period a year earlier.
