Bird Flu Returns to Bangladesh

BANGLADESH - The authorities have reported a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 21 dated 20 January to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes one new outbreak of HPAI in the district of Joypurhat in Rajshahi state, a region in the north-west of the country that borders the Indian state of West Bengal.

The disease broke out on 4 January on a commercial layer farm with 1,182 birds. Of these, 250 birds died and the rest were destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 virus has been confirmed.

The last previously reported cases of HPAI in Bangladesh was in August 2009.
