Wild Bird Found with Bird Flu in Bulgaria

BULGARIA - A wild bird found dead in Varna has been found to have been infected with H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 1 April to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

According to the report, one common buzzard (Buteo buteo) was found dead on 29 March at Constantine & Elena resort in Varna on the Black Sea coast.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the HPAI virus has been confirmed.

The last occurrence of HPAI in the country was in February 2006.
