EU Ag Council Discussed GM Maize, Vet Legislation

EU - The EU Council for Agriculture and Fisheries met in Luxembourg yesterday (29 June). Among the topics discussed were the Common Fisheries Policy, authorisation of GM maize varieties, simplification of agriculture and veterinary legislation and the dairy market.

The main results of the Council meeting were:

Concerning Fisheries, ministers exchanged their views on the Commission's communication on fishing opportunities for 2011 and on the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.
During lunch, ministers had a discussion on the reform of the Common Market Organisation for fishery and aquaculture products.
As regards Agriculture, proposals for decisions authorisation of the use of six genetically modified (GM) maize varieties in food and feed were presented to the Council for adoption. No qualified majority in favour or against the authorisation could be obtained.,
Ministers also held an exchange of views on the simplification of agriculture and veterinary legislation.
Furthermore, the Commission informed the Council of its latest quarterly report on the dairy market.
Without discussion, the Council adopted conclusions on the international competitiveness of the European agri-food model.
