Efficient fans are essential for proper ventilation of poultry production facilities. A new publication from ISU Extension explains the factors farmers should consider to address energy efficiency when selecting or upgrading fans.

Energy Efficient Fans for Poultry Production, PM 2089H, is available to download from the Extension Online Store [click here].

This publication addresses considerations when selecting a fan, such as air delivery, static pressure, fan efficiency and ratings by independent laboratories. It also describes factors that affect fan performance.

"Fans serve as the engine of the ventilation system and they are critical to bird health and performance," said Jay Harmon, ISU professor in Ag and Biosystems Engineering. "Larger fans are typically more efficient than smaller ones, but just because two fans are equal in size does not mean they are equally efficient. When you're comparing different fan manufacturers, look for independent test data."

"If you're upgrading your ventilation or building a new facility, talk to your local utility provider," said Dana Petersen, ISU Extension programme coordinator. "There may be rebates available for new equipment, but fan efficiency ratings are often used to determine rebate eligibility."

The publication is part of a series of farm energy conservation and efficiency educational materials being developed through the Farm Energy Conservation and Efficiency educational initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to increase farmers’ awareness of farm energy conservation practices. Sponsored by a grant from the Iowa Energy Center, it also is helping farmers explore alternatives to reduce farm energy demand and to improve their farms’ overall profitability in a rapidly changing energy environment.
