It will not cost NFU members a penny to have their details included on the www.ukturkeys.co.uk web site, a resource for consumers to help them find the nearest turkey supplier to their postcode.

The aim is to highlight the benefits of buying British. The consumer will know exactly where their turkey comes from, they can support local businesses and the economy at the same time and there’s also the great taste that comes from buying a farm-fresh bird.

Turkey farmers can also buy luxurious easy-to-assemble packaging for their birds, as well as posters, branded carrier bags and a leg tag that doubles up as a gift label.

An eight-page consumer leaflet containing some tasty recipe ideas is also available to thank customers for buying a local turkey.

Mike Bailey, a seasonal producer and vice-chairman of the NFU poultry board representing turkeys, said: "Producers are urged to take advantage of this free listing service to help consumers take the hassle out of finding a locally-sourced turkey this Christmas.

"It is also a great opportunity to boost income and promote the best of British while consumers can be assured of enjoying the benefits that come with buying locally-produced, farm-fresh turkeys."

Other features on the newly designed web site include recipes, cooking tips, farmer case studies as well as an interactive children's section.

The web site is now live and around 250 turkey producers have already signed up.

To register details online, NFU members should visit www.ukturkeys.co.uk and click on the 'Contact us' tab.
