US Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (Democrat-Maryland) has sent a letter to US Trade Representative, Ron Kirk, and Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, asking them to respond to China's decision to impose steep tariffs on US poultry products.

"I am very troubled by China's decision and what it will mean to Maryland’s poultry industry,” wrote Senator Mikulski, chairwoman of the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds the Department of Commerce and the Office of the United States Trade Representative. “I urge you to fight for American poultry producers and American jobs."

The Delmarva poultry industry generates $2 billion in revenue each year and is responsible for 14,700 jobs. Maryland has more than 800 chicken farms and three processing plants. Last year, Maryland's broiler production was ranked ninth nationwide with a value of nearly $650 million.
