Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, eight per cent more broiler-type eggs were set, and five per cent more chicks were placed.

Broiler-type eggs set up eight per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 198 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 30 October 2010. This was up eight per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler-type chicks placed up five per cent

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 166 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 30 October 2010. Placements were up five per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 3 January 2010 to 30 October 2010 were 7.30 billion, up two per cent from the same period a year earlier.
