With cereal prices likely to remain relatively high, feed efficiency will continue to be one of the main drivers in increasing poultry production, according to Dr Osler Desouzart, Brazil-based food industry analyst.

He was presenting the keynote speech at a Cobb Europe technical seminar for more than 60 guests from the Turkish poultry industry in Istanbul.

In the last 40 years, the world population had more than doubled to 6.7 billion with the prediction it would rise to 9.1 billion by 2050, he said.

The difference is that in the past the growth had been in the developed countries, but from now to and beyond 2050, growth will switch to the developing countries, said Dr Desouzart.

They would need to produce meat as efficiently as possible.

Erol Can, Cobb market manager for Turkey, introduced 13 speakers who discussed technical topics through the production chain, reflecting the event's title 'Enhancing efficiency and profitability in breeder and broiler production'.

Gosse Veninga, geneticist with Cobb Europe, gave an update on the genetic progress to expect from Cobb products during the coming years.
