Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), one per cent more eggs were set and chicks were placed than during the same week last year.

Broiler-type eggs set up one per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 204 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 4 December 2010. This was up one per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler-type chicks placed up one per cent

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 169 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 4 December 2010. Placements were up one per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 3 January 2010 to 4 December 2010 were 8.12 billion, up two per cent from the same period a year earlier.
