Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, one per cent more eggs were set and one per cent more chicks were placed.

Broiler-type eggs set up one per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19 State weekly program set 203 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 22 January 2011. This was up 1 per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler-type chicks placed up one per cent

Broiler growers in the 19 State weekly program placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 22 January 2011. Placements were up 1 per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 2 January 2011 through 22 January 2011 were 504 million, up one per cent from the same period a year earlier.
