Japan Reports Four More H5N1 Outbreaks on Farms

JAPAN - Four new outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus involving more than 224,000 poultry have been reported on Kyushu and Honshu.

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 9 dated 24 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes four new outbreaks on farms starting on 14 or 15 February, one in each of prefectures Mie, Aichi, Wakayama and Miyazaki. In all, 224,500 birds were involved, of which 100 died and the rest have been destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the virus has been confirmed.
