Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, three per cent fewer broiler eggs set and two per cent fewer broiler chicks were placed.

Broiler-type eggs set down three per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 206 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 4 June 2011. This was down three per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler-type chicks placed down two per cent

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 172 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 4 June 2011. Placements were down two per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 2 January 2011 to 4 June 2011 were 3.76 billion, up one per cent from the same period a year earlier.
