Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report
US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, four per cent fewer broiler-type eggs were set and three per cent fewer chicks were hatched.Broiler-type eggs set down four per cent
Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 199 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 2 July 2011. This was down four per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler-type chicks placed down three per cent
Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 170 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 2 July 2011. Placements were down three per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.
Cumulative placements from 2 January 2011 to 2 July 2011 were 4.44 billion, up slightly from the same period a year earlier.
