Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report
US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, six per cent fewer broiler-type eggs were set and five per cent fewer chicks were hatched.Broiler-type eggs set down six per cent
Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 197 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 16 July 2011. This was down six per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler-type chicks placed down five per cent
Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 165 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 16 July 2011. Placements were down five per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.
Cumulative placements from 2 January 2011 to 16 July 2011 were 4.77 billion, down slightly from the same period a year earlier.
