One in Four UK Broilers from Alternative Systems

ANALYSIS - Higher–welfare indoor systems now account for 18 per cent of the UK broiler market, writes senior editor, Jackie Linden.

According to the British Poultry Council, indoor assured (‘standard’) production now accounts for 72 per cent of the UK broiler market.

Higher welfare systems now have an 18 per cent share of that market, free–range, eight per cent and organic production, two per cent.

According to a report from the Soil Association published last week, organic broilers account for 2.2 per cent of the total UK market, worth £26 million. This represents an increase of 5.8 per cent from the previous year.
