April Egg Production Down Compared to a Year Ago

US - United States egg production dropped one per cent in April compared to the same month last year.

According to the USDA's latest Chickens and Eggs report, US egg production totaled 7.58 billion during April 2012, down 1 percent from last year. On 1 May, all layers totaled 338 million, down slightly compared to a year ago.

Egg-type chicks hatched in April 2012 were down 8 per cent compared to April 2011. Eggs in incubators on 1 May were up 4 per cent compared to a year ago.

Broiler-type chicks hatched during April 2012 dropped 4 per cent from a year ago. Eggs in incubators on 1 May also dropped 4 per cent.
