Retailers Asked to Recognise Effect of Cost Pressure

UK - The NFU, BPC and BEIC have written to the major retailers asking them to recognise the soaring commodity cost pressures and the impact this has on production costs.

The UK the poultry industry uses in excess of 5.5 million tonnes of compound feed in laying hen, broiler, turkey and breeder farming systems every year. In recent weeks the prices for wheat and soya have risen rapidly due to adverse weather conditions.

The letter calls for supermarkets take in to account the effect that the fundamental changes in commodity prices have had on poultry producers when in pricing considerations and promotional schedules for the year ahead, and that it is everyone’s interest to maintain long-term sustainable chains.
