With the Christmas tree market worth £68million, the festive turkey market worth £77million in 2010 and 14,428,000kgs of sprouts set to be sold purely for the dinner table on December 25, the NFU is stressing that it’s easy to see how valuable farming will be to the struggling UK economy during the festive season.

To highlight agriculture’s contribution to the UK during Christmas, the NFU has launched a special Farming’s 12 Gifts at Christmas calendar at www.farmingdelivers.co.uk. A door will open each day and the NFU will be sharing a gift through Facebook and Twitter to underline how farming delivers.

NFU senior campaigns adviser Gemma Fitzpatrick said: “Farming does such a fantastic job producing the goods year-in year-out. It is testament to the incredibly hard work being done all over the country that despite the pretty atrocious weather conditions in some parts, you will still be able to sit down on Christmas day and enjoy a top quality British dinner.

“In addition, we wanted to make sure that people are aware that it isn’t just for Christmas dinner that farming will deliver, there are cheeses, beers and poinsettias to name but a few things that come from British farms and forms part of the traditional festive season.

“Our online Christmas calendar showcases the best that our farms produce.

“It may have been a difficult 12 months for our farmers, but they have ensured that you can still Make it British, Make it local and Make it happen this year, because farming will deliver for you this Christmas.”
