Netherlands Reports LPAI Outbreak in Flevoland

NETHERLANDS - The Dutch veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza at a farm in Flevoland.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 20 March 2013. The outbreak was initially observed on 15 March and confirmed on 20 March.

According to the report, out of 23500 birds, 60 cases were reported. 23440 birds were destroyed.

According to the OIE, on 19 March, a 1 km protection zone was established. In this one-km zone there are no other premises. All susceptible animals on the infected premise have been killed.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.

Several control measures such as stamping out, movement control inside the country, screening, zoning, disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s) and prohibition of vaccination have been applied to control the situation.
