The outbreak was initially observed on 11 March 2013, and confirmed the next day (12 March) when a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was conducted at the Central Veterinary Institute in Lelystad. An immediate notification was submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on 13 March.

A total of 80152 birds were found susceptible, out of which 200 cases were reported. All 80152 birds were destroyed. No deaths were recorded.

According to the OIE, on 12 March 2013, a 1 km protection zone was established. There are three premises which will be screened within this one-km zone.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.

In order to contain the situation, several control measures have been applied by the OIE in conjunction with the country's veterinary authorities.
