NFU poultry board chairman and Cheshire poultry farmer Duncan Priestner said attracting and keeping skilled workers in the poultry sector was a concern, and that the next generation of producers needed to be encouraged to get involved in the industry.

Speaking ahead of this year’s Pig and Poultry LIVE event at Stoneleigh Park on 15 May, where people will be one of the top topics under discussion, Mr Priestner said the British poultry industry was in a strong position and people had to realise that it was a good industry to come and work in.

He said initiatives like the NFU’s and ABN’s Poultry Industry Programme, which aims to help young people working the sector develop skills and get involved with industry issues, were very important.

“We have been working to get people networking and involved in the politics of the industry so they get a better understanding of sector issues and want to stay involved.

“By helping them develop skills such as lobbying and negotiating, it gives them the tools they need to ensure the sector has a bright and sustainable future.”
