According to The Star Online, Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the move was to help meet the demand and stabilise the price of chicken in the market due to the coming festive season.

"We hope that with more supply of chicken in the market, the price will not increase beyond RM10 per kilo. However, these importers must adhere to certain conditions and guidelines such as getting the necessary accreditation from Jakim and the Health Ministry.

"The products imported from these countries must be from authorised slaughtering farms to prevent any problems," he said after presenting aid to settlers in Felda Tembangau.

Ismail Sabri, who is a Bera MP, said importers must first receive the mandatory halal and health certification before importing the products into the country.

He said the ministry would act as a facilitator to help stabilise the price due to an increased demand for chicken meat in the market.

"We expect to increase supply to between 2.2 million and 2.4 million birds a day.

"At the same time, there must also be strict enforcement on the ground to prevent excessive profiteering by middlemen," he said.

Mr Sabri added that during the fasting month, demand for chicken would normally increase from 1.4 million birds to about 2.2 million birds.

He said the ministry had directed Fama to investigate complaints that some pasar tani traders were selling chicken above the stipulated price of RM7.80 per kilo.
