More Newcastle Disease Outbreaks in Cyprus
CYPRUS - The Cypriot veterinary authorities have reported two further outbreaks of Newcastle disease in Lefkosia.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 2 on 1 July 2013. According to the report, the first outbreak affected a backyard holding consisting of broilers and laying hens. The birds showed clinical signs and post-mortem lesions consistent with Newcastle disease.
In the second outbreak, the affected population consists of a backyard holding in the protection zone of the previous outbreak in Agioi Trimithias. The holding consisted of 86 pigeons, 43 broilers and laying hens, 12 ducks, 5 guinea fowls and 4 quails. The broilers and laying hens showed clinical signs and post-mortem lesions consistent with Newcastle disease.
The report states that out of 225 susceptible birds, 77 cases were reported. While 48 deaths were recorded, 177 birds were destroyed.
The source of the outbreak(s) has not yet been determined.
