HPAI Outbreaks in India
INDIA - India reported two outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (HPAI) to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Both the outbreaks were reported in the state of Chhattisgarh on a poultry production unit of the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and on a government-owned poultry farm.

On 5 August 2013, India reported two outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in the state of Chhattisgarh. The outbreaks occurred in the poultry production unit of the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry in Durg and on a government-owned poultry farm in Jagadalpur. In response to the outbreak, the culling of birds, destruction of eggs and feed material will commence immediately within a one kilometer radius of the outbreak and the Government of Chhattisgarh is carrying out the Government of India’s protocol, as described in "Action Plan of Animal Husbandry For Preparedness, Control and Containment of Avian Influenza."
Additional measures should include destruction of all domestic poultry within a three-kilometre radius of the outbreak, creation of an intensive surveillance system in a 10-km radius zone, poultry market closures, a prohibition on the sale and transportation of poultry products in the affected area, a ban on the movement of farm personnel, and clean-up and disinfection of the contaminated premises with proper disposal of dead birds and infected materials.
