Tamil Nadu Officials Seize Chicken, Meat

INDIA - Coimbatore Corporation officials in the state of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday (2 October) seized 60 kg chicken from a shop near Maruthamalai.

According to sources, all shops dealing in meat, chicken, or pork were supposed to down their shutters on account of Gandhi Jayanti, The Hindu reports.

The officials, based on the instructions of the city health officer, carried out the inspection in Appanaickenpalayam, Maruthamalai, Vadavalli, Thudiyalur, Telugupalayam, Selvapuram, Ukkadam, Puliakulam, Ramanathapuram, Peelamedu and Singanallur and found only a shop selling chicken.

The sources said that the officials seized the meat, took it to the Coimbatore Corporation Zoo, fed the animals and destroyed the rest by pouring phenyl and burying the same at the Zoo premises.

In Tirupur, the Corporation health officials on Wednesday issued show cause notices to as many as 24 shop owners who were found selling meat at Sandahipettai, Mangalam road, Iduvampalayam, near Old bus stand, Avinashi road and Karuvampalayam.

City Health Officer R. Selvakumar told The Hindu that the procedures leading to cancellation of licences to these shops would be initiated once they reply to the show cause notices within a week.
