Turkey Supply to Peruvian Market to Reach Two Million Units

PERU - In the coming Christmas and New Year holidays, turkey supplies in the domestic market are estimated to reach two million units, up 3.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2012 (1.9 million units), according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI). The estimated per bird weight range is between 6 to 12 pounds.

On Christmas and New Year, it is estimated that the availability of turkey meat in the domestic market will be 13.4 thousand tons, up 4.7 per cent compared to 2012 (12.8 thousand tons). This is expected to cover the Peruvian consumers' demand.

Turkey products to meet domestic demand includes imports of frozen whole turkey. For this year, imports of whole frozen turkey is estimated to reach 33 tons, up 25 per cent compared to 2012.

The per capita availability of turkey for this year is estimated at 1 kilo per 11 grams, up by 4.3 per cent compared to last year, which was 969 grams per capita per year.

Exports of whole frozen turkey this season is estimated to be around 1700 tons, up 7.6 per cent compared to 1580 tons in 2012. The main destinations for Peruvian turkey are Colombia, Ecuador and Panama.
