New Outbreak of H5N1 in Vietnamese Poultry

VIET NAM - An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype has been reported in village poultry in the south of the country.

The veterinary authority has sent Follow Up Report No. 15 dated 20 March to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The outbreak occurred at Nam Chinh in Binh Thuan province on 18 March. Out of a village flock of 6,800, 750 birds showed symptoms and around 500 died. The remaining birds have been destroyed.

The presence of the highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype of the virus has been confirmed.
