Nepal Declares Freedom from H5N1 Avian Flu

NEPAL - Nepal has declared the country free from H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) with effect from 22 May 2014.

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up report No. 1 dated 25 May to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

Following one outbreak of H5N1 HPAI in February 2014, stamping out operations were completed and surveillance activities were intensified outside the zone and throughout the country.

During this period, morbidity and mortality in poultry were investigated; samples collected were tested for avian influenza virus. All samples were negative for HPAI H5N1.
