Newcastle Disease Outbreaks in Hazafon, Hamerkaz

ISRAEL - The Israeli veterinary authorities have reported four outbreaks of Newcastle disease in poultry farms located in Hazafon and Hamerkaz, affecting 41 and 44-week-old table egg layers, four-week-old broilers and six-week-old turkeys.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 7 on 2 July 2014.

According to the report, a total of 152,200 birds were found susceptible, out of which 1,300 deaths were reported. The remaining 150,900 birds were destroyed.

On 23 June 2014, a real-time PCR test was carried out at the Northern Avian Diseases Laboratory. The test resulted positive.

Again, on 29 June 2014, a pathogen isolation by egg inoculation was conducted at the Kimron Veterinary Institute, Avian Diseases Laboratory. This test also confirmed the presence of the Newcastle disease virus.

The source of the outbreaks, however, has not yet been determined.
