Newcastle Disease Detected in St Helena

ST HELENA - There have been seven new outbreaks of Newcastle disease in St Helena affecting the New Ground and Half Tree Hollow areas.

The outbreaks which affected laying chickens resulted in 57 cases, 51 deaths and the destruction of 45 animals.

The source of the outbreak is still not confirmed but it is thought to be contact with wild infected species.

A total of 2222 birds have been vaccinated against Newcastle disease.
